About Melanie

My mission is to make cities great places to live, grow and play.

I work on multiple fronts to help urban communities transform themselves into more viable, healthy and attractive places to live for everyone. I’m an urban planner, community advocate and local government leader who believes that our interdependence and regional connectivity enhances community vitality.

As an urbanist, I seek to improve my life where I live and how I chose to live.  I want to help improve the quality of life for others. We live, work and go about our lives within the urban environment which was created for us and by us—highways, streets, sidewalks, green space, downtowns, districts and neighborhoods—these environments dictate how we live our lives and interact with people. I love the city of Ferndale, where I live and serve on city council. I love the city of Detroit, where I work. I play in the great cities across Michigan. My life takes me beyond municipal borders.

Let’s connect about all things urban issues like transit advocacy, transit oriented development, Complete Streets, neighborhood revitalization, economic development, place making, lean government, e-government, municipal collaboration, etc.

I love to bicycle and explore new cultures.
